1931 Ford A-400 Convertible Sedan “Cali”

$65,000

Henry Ford commissioned son, Edsel, to design and build a car that he could sell to his country club friends.  One the would-be proud to drive to events but also drive every day.  Edsel came up with a convertible sedan, the 400A.  Some 5,500 A400’s were built during the latter half of 1931 and a handful still exist.

This is Number 1025 out of the 5,500. Originally sold in Maine but made its way to California where the 3rd owner restored it, finishing it in 2009. During restoration, owner added ’32 Ford front axle with hydraulic brakes, 4:11 rear end, F100 Steering box, ’32 Ford 17” wheels that were powder coated, 17” beauty rings and new Ford hub caps. Dash and moldings done in beautiful Burl Walnut, eyebrows and dash insert are genuine walnut burl.  Instruments are housed in rare and desirable “Aristocrat” instrument panel with adds an oil pressure gauge and temperature gauge.  Car was sent to the LeBaron-Bonny factory for leather interior and convertible top. Turn signals are integrated into the cowl lights with amber lens. Car has original Ford bumpers that have been re-plated.  Trunk and trunk rack added during restoration. Convertible top boot and ash trays are present. Body and fenders are original Henry Ford steel.

Tom Mack bought the car from California in around 2020.  Radial tires were added for touring. Car had an over-engineered engine, ’32 Ford transmission, and Borg Warner overdrive.  Engine and overdrive immediately malfunctioned.  After 3 different engines, in 2024, we installed a professionally built Burtz 4-cylinder engine assembled by Taylor Made Engines of Texas.  Also installed a simple 5-speed synchronized manual transmission for easy touring. At that time, modern tube shocks were added for safety.  Car has a modern distributor and is updated to 12 volts with electric windshield wiper. Seat belts have been added to front seats.

We have participated in many tours with this car.  There are photos of the car on the coast of Maine and at Gettysburg Battlefield. There’s also a photo of the car being deluged in a summer storm in Pennsylvania, but she remained dry inside.  Would not be afraid to drive the car coast to coast if I wanted to.

Price $65,000. Delivery arranged at buyer’s expense.  Financing available OAC. We’ve been trading in quality Model A’s since  the 1970’s. 803-351-3695.  Prosperity, South Carolina
