On the morning of 09/11/01 I was a police Sergeant working on 41st and 8th Avenue in Manhattan.
We heard of some type of problem that occurred at the WTC. I was advised to respond there with additional manpower. A bus was commandeered and we went downtown, I had 15 officers with me. At the end of that day, I only came back with 10.
If you recall that tidal wave of debris that was released when the building collapsed, that is what I was hit with.
As the years have gone by, the men that were with me have all succumbed to various types of cancer, some of which I have never heard of.
Out of the group, I’m pretty much the last man standing.
Because of what I inhaled I have to go to the cancer center every 3 months for monitoring and have a CT scan once a year to keep an eye on my lungs to make sure the nodules are not growing.
So getting back to the car, my wife said to me that maybe I should get this car while you can and enjoy it, so that’s where you came in, and I thank you. I’ve already told her to contact you should the time come that I don’t need it any longer..
You did a good thing.
